THE DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKE IN LIFOU.
The New Caledonia Moniteur, of the 28th April, received by the mail, publishes letters from Rev Father Gaide, and Rev J. Speight, missionaries in that Island, giving further details of the earthquake which took place on the 28th March, between 11 and 12 p.m. M. Gaide mentions that at Mo a the sea rushing in encompassed all the houses, and drew down most of them in retiring. Thirty persons perished, most of them women and children. Mr Sleigh relates the heroic conductor sevsral mothers in endeavouring to save their children. "One of them carried a child to each hand, and held a third in her mouth. There were three shocks ; the first lasted od seconds. It was supposed to come from Tanna, where there is an active volcano.
