MELBOURNE
Saturday. The child of a butcher named White, while playing in his veraudan this morning, fell on one of the shop knives, which passed through her, killing her on the spot. The Opera House here is taken by th Alice May troupe. A gentleman named Griffiths died mysteriously yesterday in Tasmania. He is supposed to have a wife and family in England. A large sum of money was found on the body. David Grant, a sharebroker at Sandhurst, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for resisting the police, as the magistrates held that "being wealthy, a fine was no punishment.', Subsequently, on the representation of some of the leading citizens, the sentence was commuted to a fine. Grant was drunk when arrested.
Maize is firm at 5s 3d. The market cleared of all supplies. It is stated that an expedition is being organised for the colonization of New Guinea. The loss on the inland postage amounts to a^hundred thousand pounds. A bill has been submitted to enable the Melbourne University to confer decree i in surgery.
The tender of Fishburn and Morton of £7000 per mile has been accepted for the construction of ten miles of the Beech worth Railway. A down train collided yesterday with a bullock, and the engine and several carriages were thrown off the line. The train was righted after three hours detention. The locomotive was slightly damaged, but no person was injured. There was an attempt made to rob the Bank of New South Wales at St George on the night of the 22nd ultimo. An eutrance into the bank was effected by means of skeleton keys. The burglars were captured on the premises, and have since been committed for trial at the Toowoomba assizes.
Advices from India state that a revolt occurred at Baroda, and that the infant son of the Guicowar's daughter was placed on the throne by the excited populace. The revolt was ultimately suppressed.—Cholera is raging in India. People have been attacked and have died in railway trains.
Goldsborough is backed to win £5000 on the champion race. The police are stringently carrying out the law relating to Sunday trading. A new Ministry has been formed. Mr. Boucaul is Premier.
A sailor, whose name is at present unknown, was killed on the railway. Tne lower part of his body was found in a state of pulp. A sale of a cargo of wheat, deliverable in a month or so hence, took place at 3s lOd.
The Sunday question of opening the Public Library and Museum was negatived in the Assembly, in a thin House, by one vote. For the Melbourne Cup there are 88 entries ; for the Champion Stakes, 78, sixteen of them being from Sydney; for the Maribyrnong Plate, 56 ; for the Derby, 83 against a hundred last year ; for the Oaks, 42 ; and for the St. Leg^r, 85. Fuller, a caster, obtained £225 damages for breaking his leg while an employe of Messrs Stephen and Delaney, millers. The Gothenburg Relief Fund has been divided. The captain's widow and family get £400 ; the widow and fami'y of the chief officer, £480 ; Mrs Goulcler, widow ef one of the passengers, having eight children, £535 ; aad others' proportionately. Parliament has voted £500 for experiments by Professor Halfoid, in the case of snake poisoning. At a Board meeting of the clergy, the Stipend Augmentation Fund is reported as falling off, occasioned by several parishes having decreased in population ; clergy an d families are in a state^urgently needing help.
