A complaint from Mr W. A, Murray, that a monopoly of purchasing land on the Waitoa river had been given to a private individual was referred to a select committee. The Provincial Treasurer replying to Mr Lloyd said there were no funds available for opening up the East Coast road via the Hot Springs ; Mr Taylor was informed that no information had been received from the General Government as to when the Kaipara R°ailway would be open for traffic ; also as to whether the Auckland extension would be proceeded with. The Treasurer informed Mr Lundon that there were no funds to supply the £6,000 it would take to increase the Onehunga wharf accommodation; and also that no reply had been received from the General Government in respect to the granting of waste lands at Mangere to the Superintendent. In reply to Mr Bagnall, Mr Wood said that Captain Eraser had not yet reported on the petition of Messrs McGregor, Hanlan, and others. DUTY OK KAURI GUM. Mr Dargaville moved, " That in the opinion of this Council it i 3 desirable that a duty of £5 per ton be levied on all kauri gum exDorted from this colony, and that the revenue derived therefrom be declared land revenue, and applicable exclusively to purposes of education. That a copy of this re-1 solution be transmitted to His Honor the Superintendent, asking him to forward the same to the General Government yrith. a request that legal effect may be given thereto;'' The motion gave rise to an animated discussion, in which nearly all the members present took part.—Mr Lusk proposed as an amendment that the matter be referred to a select committee. This was seconded by Mr Reader Wood. On the question being put that the words proposed to be left out stand part of the question, the result was :— Ayes 18 : Boylan, Buckland, Cheeseman, Crawford, Dargaville, Dignan, Goldie, Graham, Hamlin, Hurst, May, Morris, Reed, Roche, Ryburn, Swanson, Taylor, Wilson. Noes 16 : Bagnall, Ball, Brown, Carpenter, Davies, Douglas, Harris, Lloyd, Lundon, Lusk, McLeod, Moat, Peacocke, Prime, Shepherd, Wood. —The original motion was then put and carried. - The Grammar-school Reserve Bill was read a second time and passed through committee. The object of the Bill is to authorise the Superintendent to sell the reserve to the General Government. A similar bill to enable the Superintendent to sell a piece of land known as the hospital reserve, near Low and Motion's mill, was read a second time. The debate upon the Public Buildings Bill having been adjourned, the remaining business was postponed, and the house rose at nine o'clock.
