£200 worth of Cromwell Waterworks 7 per cent. Cromwell debentures have been sold to Colonial Banks at 87.
A farewell banquet to Sir J. C. L. Richardson at the Molyneaux was an immense success. He stated that, to his friends, he was the " Major." He hoped ever to remain so, while for himself'he did not desire the honor. It was not a personal one, but conferred in his position as Speaker of the Legislature Council. He bad not yet been officially apprised of the fact himself.
In the case of Mr Jeffreys, who died from supposed injuries inflicted by Crossan, the jury, after an hour's consultation, returned the following verdict at 10\30 last night :— " Deceased died from infiamation of the bowels, but how and by ■whom the injury was caused, there was not sufficient evidence to shew. The medical testimony is conflicting "
The Provincial Council sits at two. Mr McLean has been returned for Waikouaiti by a majority of 52.
In the Supreme Court, yesterday, a passenger named Barrowman sued the captain of the ship Auckland ; damages £500, for putting Barrowman in irons during the voyage. The case is proceeding. The defence is that it was absolutely necessary for discipline.
