HARBOUR BOARD.—This Day.
The fortnightly meeting of the Harbour Board took place to-day, at the offices of the Board, in Fort-street. Present: W. C. Daldy (Chairman), F. L. Eaton, H. Brett, O. Mays, J. Cosgrave, D. H. McKenzie. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read and considered from the Superintendent, in reference to the jury's rider to their verdict on the death of Henry Hancock, found drowned in Freeman's Bay ; on the 4th'ult. From the Superintendent in reference to approaching elections, and from the Town Clerk intimating that Councillor Macready had been disputed to represent the City Council at the Board in place of Mr H. Isaacs. His Honor's letter referring to the rider, which recommended that more lights should be placed on the Queen-street wharf, was referred to the Wharf Committee. ACCOUNTS AND FCTNDS. Payments of accounts from the General Fund were ordered to the extent of £783|145, and |from the loan to the extent of £345 3s. These payments left a balance on general account of £750 12s lid, and a loan account of £2.
The chairman said they would be shortly obliged to overdraw to the extent of £2000. The minutes of the Finance Committe embodying these figures were adopted. MESSRS. HOLMES' COAL BIN.
The Wharf Committee recommenden that a space on the North Shore Ferry T., 15ft x 10ft, be granted to Messrs Holmes Bros, for use as a coal bin, the weight of coal not to exceed 25 tons.
The report was adopted,
CHARGES ON BALLAST.
Mr D. H. McKenzie moved "That the extra charge of one shilling per ton on ballast paid by vessels going out of the colony, be abolished from this date."
A very general opinion was expressed in favor of Mr McKenzie's motion, but, as the Chairman stated, it would cause some confusion altering "the tariff at present. The subject was referred to the Tariff Committee.
MR. TONK'S DEPARTURE,
Before the meeting broke up, Mr B. Tonks said he could not "leave this, the last meeting he should be able to attend before his departure for England without paying a high tribute of admiration for the manner in which the chairman had always attended to the duties of his position. Captain Daldy thanked Mr Tonks for his eulogium and paid that gentleman a high compliment for his assiduity at the Board meetings. The meeting then separated.
