HAMILTON.
(From our own Correspondent.) This day,
The Court of Inquiry on the alleged neglect of duty of Major Clare, A.<\, sat to-day. The Court wa-S composed of Major Gordon, President; Major Scannell, A.C., and Major Mair, Militia. Two charges were preferred —Ist, charging Major Clare with gross neglect of duty, in giving a verbal permission to Sub-Inspector JNo'rthcroft to journey overland via Mokau to Taranaki, and with constant apathy and want of zeal in the service. With neglect of duty in not reporting to the commander his having given such permission The charges are laid under 9th section of the A.C Regulations which leaves no Aalternative but dismissal in case the charges are proved. Major Clare, on the charges be^ng read, over, asked by whom they were proffered. The President informed him that there -was no sigdature to them.
Major Clare demurred to the charges being proceeded with, and said he did not believe they had been seen or sanctioned in their present shape by the Native Minister. He further said It wes not in the nature of things that the Commissioner the Chief Officer of the force could have framed such charges against him, and until there was someone bold enough to sign them he wished the Court to stay proceedings.
After some discussion the President telegraphed to the Commissioner, and the Court adjourned until 10 a.m. to-morrow.
