ANCHOVIES AND TOAST.
(Prom our London Correspondent.)
THE NEW SPANISH KING. Spanish affairs have taken a nsw turn by the sudden proclamation of the son of the ex-Queen Isabella as Alfonso XIL The country, the army, and ie is said many of the Carlists bave welcomed the pronunc.amento,- and at any rate the name is a lucky one in the history of Spain. The young fellow who baa been called to the throne *a a staunch Catholic, and has hinted that he will be at the beck of the Pope, rind this is bis only weak trait. He has studied the military profession in England, and has shown good average abilities. He was born in 1857, and is 40th in direct descent from Don Pelayo, who raised the Christian Standard in Galicia in 716. There's a pedigree for you ! But there are nine female representatives in it. However, there are precious few either kings or commoners, in these degenerate days who can show anything liiie half the distance with all the aid of males, iemales, and changes of name and arms they can muster. It is said there are not a hundred families in Great Britain who can really boast of a pedigree beyond tbe Stuarts that is not mostly bogus.
PHILADELPHI. A EXHIBITION. England has changed her mmd, and has decided to go in for the Philadelphia Exhibition. I suppose your colony will be well represented there. As far as the Exhibition is itself concerned, I don'c suppose many Englishmen will trouble it We have been nauseated with such things, bub it will be a good chance of seeing tbe States cheaply, as there will bj a reduced scale of ocaau passage fares.
