(From our own Correspondent.) This day. Singular Action by an Embezzler. A man named Montague Fox Henry was brought up at the Police Court to-day, charged with embezzling the sum of £50 from Shadbolt and Compauy, Sandhurst, Victoria. From the evidence of the chief detective, it appeared that he had received an anonymous letter, pointing to the prisoner as being "wanted ia Victoria." When the prisoner was arrested he stated that he had written the letter himself. He handed over to the detective the keys of Shadbolt's safe, and also a cheque-book belonging to the former. The Kaiapoi Regatta. There are a good number of entries for the Kaiapoi regatta, which is proceeding to-day, and is a success. Mrs Walter Hill. Mrs Walter Hill took her benefit la3t night before a very good house. She played Eily O'Connor in the Colleen Bawn ; Miss May Howard appearing as Ann Chute. Mr and Mrs Case. The Cases opened at the Oddfellows' Hall to a good house. There will be a large exodus of sporting men from here to Dunedin races. Betting ia not very brisk, but several Canterbury owners are sanguine of the Dunedin Cup being won by one of our representatives. Alleged Forgery. Alex Le Bas, formerly a resident in the North Island, and believed to have served in the Colonial Forces, was yesterday committed for trial for forgery and uttering. He had obtained £9 from Mr Warner, landlord of the Commercial Hotel, on a cheque purporting to be signed by Howard Bros., representing them as dtock owners, no such firm, being in existence.
