REPORTED DISCOVERY OF GOLD AT HOKIANGA.
By the Rowena, which arrived this morning from the Kerth, we hear of a reported discovery of gold ah Hokianga. The facts, so far as we have been able to glean them, appear to be as follows : - A party of Mr Lundon's men had besn for some time working sleepers on the Waihou Creek, about 20 uiiies from Herd's Point. About a month ago they gave up their work, and went to the river prospecting, in consequence of some reports about of the exittence of gold in the neighbourhood. Some of them turned up a few days ago at Russell with several specimens, which they alleged they had found in their search. Mr Yarborough, who arrived by the steamer this morning, saw two of the specimens, which were in possession of a man named Kay, and informs us that they ware very rich. The only question is were they found fairly where they are stated to havo been. The people in the district are incredulous in the matter, and many roundly affirm that the quartz has been brought from the Thames. The natives report that t^old has been found at Mongomuka. MEASLES AMONG THE NATIVES. Measles are very prevalent among the natives. Numbers are dying from the disease which is of a malignan ttype. SUPPOSED WRECK. The schooner Swallow which It ft Auckland on the 29th instant for the Noitb, has not been heard of since. Two heary spars have been found on the beach at Ahipara. They are supposed to be part of the wreck of a large ship.
