pTheN.Z.S.S. Company's s.s. Wellington, M. Carey commander, arrived at Onehunga at half-past twelve o'clock to-day after a most severe passage. She left Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. on the 21st ultimo ; experienced variable winds and fine weather to Nelson ; from thence encountered a violent gale with heavy sea, commencing at E.N.E. and veering round to S.W. with all the force of a cyclone, the barometer falling to 2870; head reached off the land under close-reefed fore and main trysail all last night; crossed the bar at 11 a.m., and arrived as above. Passengers :—Saloon : Mr and Mrs McPherson, Messrs. Hayman, Langford, and Brown. Steerage : Mrs Mayner, Mrs Moulder, Miss Mayner, Messrs Mayner, Matthews, Roddy, Boyce, McLeod, Pardiug, Pelly, Johnson, Davidson, and two Maoris. We are indebted to Mr W. J. Wilcocks, purser, for report, delivery of files, and other favours.

The R.M. steamship Cyphreneg, Captain Wood, arrived this morning at half-past nine from Napier and the South bringing the Suez Mail which was transhipped from the s.s. Albion. The Cyphrenes arrives a day late owing to having experienced very heavy weather since leaving Napier. Captain Woods reports having left Port Chalmers at 3.30 p.m. on the 29th ultimo, Lyttelton at 1 p.m. on the 30th, Wellington at 4 p.m. on the 31st, Napier at 1 p.m. on the Ist August, arriving at Auckland at 9.30 a.m. on the 4th instant. On the passage from Port Chalmera to Napier had fine weather with head winds. From Napier to Auckland met a succession of northerly gales with very heavy head seas, necessitating slowing the engines. Steamed dead slow until inside Cape Colville, when the wind hauled round to the S. W., with fine weather and smooth water. We are indebted to Mr Hillman, the purser, for prompt delivery of our files and for other favours. Passengers : —For San Francisco : Mr and Mrs Cargill; Messrs Herbert, Merewither, J. Doric, C. The s.s. Rowena left for the Bay of Islands this morning at ten o'clock, having been detained from last night owing to the heavy weather. She took a general cargo and a full complement of passengers. The heavy westerly gale which, was blowing yesterday increased in violence up to a late hour last night. Shortly after midnight the wind fell suddenly, and early this morning the weather broke fine with a gentle breeze from the south, which afterwards hauled round nearly east. With daybreak there was a general stir among the • vessels lying ready for sea. Several departures it will bo seen have taken place during the day.

The brigantino Coronet, Captain Rose, arrived this morning from. Tahiti and Karotonga. She left the latter island on Thursday, the 9th ultimo. Had fresh S.W. winds till the day before yesterday, when the Cavalloa were sighted at eleven o'clock. After that had strong westerly gales with very heavy sea. Brought np in Kangitoto Channel at five o'clock last night. The Coronet brings a cargo of island produce as per imports, consigned to Messrs. Owen and Graham. Passengers : Messrs Ryan, Scotland, Brown, Capt. Young, and four natives.

The barque Novelty hauled away from tho ■wharf this morning early. She Is ready to sail for Newcastle.

The barque Hylton Castle hauled into the stream to-day. Captain Scott is detained in port by a claim for alleged short delivery of iron. When that is settled his smart vessel will leave our waters for the tight little island of Britain. Her last run home it will be recollected wa3 one of the best of the season. She is in magnificent sailing tiim now, and with ordinary luck ought to make another fast passage. The schooner Sunbeam hag cleared outwards fo* Waipn.

The mail steamer Cyphrenes, Captain Wood, left this afternoon for Kaudavu with the English San Francisco mail She takes several passengers from Auckland in addition to those which arrived from the South. The barque Novelty got under weigh this afternoon and proceeded on her voyage to Newcastle in ballast. The schooner Emu was to-day hauled in ! close to the Custom-house-street end of the Wharf that her screw might be examined at low water. A rope fouled it a few days ago in coming up from the Bay of Islands, and it was suspected that it was not entirely cleared. She cleared out to-day at the Custom house, nnd will leave for Taiuia to load for the South to-morrow.
