The Evening Star: WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News and the Morning News.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 1874.

For the cause that laclc* assistance. For the wrong that needs resistance, For tbe future in th» distance.

And the good that wo can do,

Thk returns arc all in, and G. Yon der Heyde, Esq , is the member for Waitemata. We are glad of this, but we have no disposi. tion to exult in the hour of victory. Had it been otherwise we should have spoken warmiy on the returns from some of the polling booths. No advantage would'now arise from doing so, and we content ourselves with saying that G. Yon der Heyde, Esq., is the member for Waitemata. We believe he will make a good representative, and as he owes his position neither to bribery nor any other corrupt influence, but has conducted his election in a manner becoming a gentleman and a member of Parliament, we are warranted in expecting that his career in public life will' be in accordance with his candidature. There has been considerable warmth exhibited during the progress of the struggle, and we must admit we have ourselves yielded somewhat to the impulses oi the occasion. Had our local contemporaries been taking any part in the election we would probably not have so much felt the necessity for action. But having resting on our shoulders the entire burthen of guiding the public feeling 'I';s great electororate we felt that the press must do its duty. However, if we have offended any we forgive them, and if there are any who feel that they have been spoken of by us in electioneering language we bear them no ill-will. We have no doubt that those who took a different view during the struggle will yet come to our way of thinking, and that all will yet have to acknowledge that Mr Yon der Heyde is the man for Waitemata.
