THE WAITEMATA POLLING. —OUR PIGEONS.

Considering the thickness of the weather hat night our pigeons did good service in brineing in the returns from the polling places in the oufc-districts of Waitemata. Before six o'clock we J were able to publish all thfl returns with the exception of Helensville and Huia. With respect to the latter place we must acquit the bird detailed for the service from all blame as the faithful messenger did indeed return with a despatch from our reporter, who had lost his way in the bush near thespot where the late lamented Rev D. Hamilton met his death. Had the bird reached the Hnia we doubt not that the return from that district would have been included in the number of those we were enaUert to Dublish last night. The non Arrival of the pigeon from Helensvillo was no doubt due to the mist aud darkness which rendered it impossible for a bird to sco Auckland from such a distance and steer a e'ear course The pigeon came home early this morning and delivered its message in safety. The " Herald " and " Cross " to-day both have to acknowledge their indebtedness to our faithful carriers for returns which could not have been obtained last night in any other way. We give below the complete returns, which, it will be seen, place Mr Yon der Heyde at the head of the poll by a majority of 50 votes.
