DUNEDIN.
This day.
A fire occurred last night at the premises of Mr A. __._. Hay, draper, Princes-street, near the Octagon. The building is of brick, and the fire brigades and others who assisted were thus able to confine the fire to the place where it originated. The whole of Mr Hay's stock was however destroyed, and some goods removed from the adjoining premises occupied by Hogg and Huttou were damaged. These are covered by an insurance policy of £1,000 in the Norwich Union Office.
Hay's stock, which is a total loss, was insured in the Victoria for £1000, and in the Alliance for £1000.
The buildings, which are partially destroyed, were insured in the South British for £1000, Liverpool and London £1000, and Lancashire £500.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Supposed to have been a defective stove. No one was on the premises. The building was gutted. Hogg and Hutton's goods were chiefly damaged by water. A writ was served to-day on the directors of the Otago Daily Times at the suit of Judge Ward for £2,000 damages for publishing telegrams which plaintiff alleges are forgeries. The case need not have come into Court if the directors had apologised and assisted Judge Ward in the detection of the forgery.
