ARRIVAL OF THE HERO.

The s.s. Hero, Captain Logan, arrived from Sydney last night shortly after twelve o'clock having had a ran of six days across. The .following is the report of passage snpplied us by Captain Logan : —The Hero left Sydney and cleared the Heads at 6.40 p.m. "on the 15th inst ; passed the Three Kings at 7.30 p.m. on the 20th, and arrived in harbonr at midnight on the 21st. On the passage across the Hero experienced light N.E. winds until Saturday evening last; then light airs and «alms on the remainder of the passage, and fine weather throughout. We are indebted to Mr Cogswell, purser of vessel, for prompt delivery of our files and other favours. The Hero brigs a full general cargo and the following passengers':—Mrs Konaldson and family (3), Mr and Mrs Kennan and child, Mrs Lear, Miss F. O'Leary, Miss Ronald son, Miss Hooper, Miss F. M. Downman, Dr. Sweatman ; Messrs C. Reid,-S. Mitchell, J. Bull, G. A. Thompson, Master Eeid ; Mr and Mrs Mills, Miss and Master Mills, MrsMacdonald, Mrs R. .J. Taylor ; Messrs V. .0. Wright,. G. H. Fletcher; Harry Gordon, Murray, R. Garbhardt, Rush, G. T. Edwards and servant, Master C. Martin ; and 46 in the'steerage.— Cruickshank and Co., agents.

The N.Z.'S.S. Co's s.s. Wellington, M. Carey, commander, arrived off the Manukau bar at 9 am. this morning, and came up to Onehunga on the afternoon tide. Experienced variable winds and fine throughout the passage. The Wellington brings the Auckland portion of Suez mail. Passengers—Saloon : Mr and Mrs Cooke, Mrs South and child, Mrs Stokes, Mrs Currie, Misses Currie, Giles, Clemon, Clark, Wilson, Mr Wood and servant, Messrs Graham, Bridson, Brown Nathan, Wi Katene. Steerage :Mr and Mrs Armitage andfamily (2), Mr and Mrs Shapter, .Mr Robinson,,Mr Turner, Messrs Hicks and Scott, Mr Daw, and five Maoris. We are indebted to Mr W. J. Wilcocks, purser, for "files.

The New Zealand Shipping Company had on the bertli for this port, when the mail left, the ship Sussex, 1500 tons, Captain Kenny, and Caroline', 1300 tons, Captain Clyman." Both vessels to sail in March. The s.s. Rangatira is expected to leave Sydney for this port on the 22nd inst. The schooner Augusta arrived at Sydney via Newcastle on the 31st ult. She was to load again for this port. The Go-Ahead left the Onehunga wharf to-day for Wanganui at 3 p.m. Passengers: Miss;Elliott, Miss Lawrence, and 8 others. The s.s. City of Melbourne arrived at Sydney on the 6th inst., having made the passage across in 4 days 14 hours—a very -fine performance. The Hylton Castle barque, having discharged her cargo has been taking in ballast prior to clearing out for Newcastle. Messrs Cruickshank and Co. inform the public that the .sailing of the Hero is postponed from Friday—as advertised in another column —till Saturday at no.on, when she will sail punctually. The brig Drover left Newcastle for the Thames, on the 3rd inst. with 260 tons coal. •The ship Countess of Kintore arrived in London on the 17th February after a good rough weather passage of 94 days. She is loading again for Auckland. Messrs Alexander Stephen and Sons, of Ldmehouse, have just launched an iron screw steamer of about 400 tons register for the New Zealand trade. She is to be named the Bruce, and is to be fitted with compound engines. i The barque Queen of the Sea arrived at Newcastle from Auckland on the 4th instant. The s.s. Hero is announced to leave for Sydney on Friday next at 2 p.m. The brig Derwent has shipped two large engine' boilers for Kaipara from Messrs Fraser and Tinne. The s.s. Phoebe is announced to sail for the South from the Manukau to-morrow at noon. ■

The barque lone came alongside the new western outer T of the wharf last night Captain Nearing has undertaken to discharge her cargo. This vessel, together with the Hylton Caßtle and Anazi, are three, of the r smartest barques ever seen in Auckland I OOttT.. . > I

The schooner Ocean has been purchased by Messrs Schapp and Ansenne. Captain Rawlings, late of schooner Mary. Ellen, takes charge of the new vessel. The barque Anazi is waiting for the bngantine Coronet, from the Islands, which is to bring ber over 100 tons of cargo for London. This will nearly make up her quantity. Messrs B. Tonks and Co. announces thaj they will offer for sale to-morrow, the brig Albion, 263 tons, as she lies in the Kaipara River, at their Brunswick Mart, Queenstreet.

The schooner Daphne has had her repairs completely executed. She has been fitted with a new cabin, new deck, and new spars, and has been thoroughly caulked and recoppered. She is to sail in a day or two for Wangapoa to load timber for Levuka. The new schooner, Emu, built at the Thames, was towed up to town last night by the p.s. Golden Crown. She* was anchored off the Breakwater this morning. The new vessel is a very likely looking craft, having good lines and a smart appearance. She came alongside the Mechanics' Bay wharf to receive her auxiliary engines. The Gyphrenes mail steamer is expected here on Friday next. According to the latest telegrams this vessel was to connect with the Mikado and bring the mail on to New Zealand, the latter steamer returning; to San Francisco. The Mongol is to carry the Sydney portion of the mail and passengers. -The s.s. Star of the South, Captain Fatquhar, arrived in harbour at 10 o'clock last night from Levuka with a general cargo as per imports, and the following passengers : —Saloon : Rev Mr Simmonds, Mrs Simmonds and child, Mr A. Levy; Mrs Drury 3 children, and servant j Mr Lepine, Mr Brownell and child, Steerage: MissMarter, Mrs Jones, and Messrs Stanley, Stuart, Betforth, and Hqlman.— A.S.P.Co., agents. Captain Farquhar supplies us with the following report of the vessel's movements since leaving Auckland: —"Left Auckland for Levuka at 7.30 p.m. on March 26th, with every appearance of dirty weather. When off Point Rodney the wind increased to a heavy gale from the N.E. with heavy rain. At 4 a.m., ship rolling very much, the cattle fittings broke adrift, and large quantities of water going down the forehold had to bear up for Whangaruru harbour. Got fittings all secure and left again on Saturday, the 28th, at 5 p.m. Experienced strong E. winds till making latitude 19 deg. 30 mm. S., longtitude 178 deg. 40 miri. E.; afterwards light N.E. winds with dense rain till arrival on Friday, April 3rd, at 5 p.m., making the passage in six days from Whangaruru ] eft Levuka for Taviuni at 5 a.m. on the Bth ; arrived at Vanua Point at 0 p.m. same night. Shipped 105 bags maize next morning with our boats off the beach. Left again at 2 p.m. for Gila ; brought up at Loma Loma for the night; found H.M.S. Pearl lying there. I would caution masters of vessels going through Lomo Lomo Strait to give Goat Island a wide berth, as a reef runs off the N. W. point of the island one and a-balf miles, also between the island and the main land, the sheet chart shewing a clear passage both sides of the island. Left Lomo Lomo at 4.30-a.m. for Gila plantation; arrived there at 8 a.m., and commenced taking maize on board with our boats. Finished loadingJat 8 p.m., 327 sacks maize. Left at 3 a.m.,, next morning for Hillsbury plantation; shipped 82 bags maize, and left for Levuka. calling at Vanu Point for passengers. Arrived at Levuka on Sunday, at 8 a.m. On Monday took in maize. §,cotton, cocpanut oil, cocoanuts, etc. Left for Auckland on Tuesday, 14th, at 9 a.m. ; passed H.M.S. Rosariooutside the reef, 22 days from Sydney. The schooner Luie Low arrived the day previous from Sydney, 21 days out. The brig Western Star, 23 days out, had not arrived when the Star left. Passed the mail steamer Mongol at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, in latitude 23 deg. 28 mm. S., longtitude 177 deg. 44 mm, E. The Star experienced during the first part of the return passage light head winds, thence strong head winds into port."
