FAREWELL ADDRESS TO SIR WM. AND LADY MARTIN.
The departure of the s.s. Mongol this afternoon was marked by an occurrence of such interest that we regret that the late hour at which it. took place precludes our doing more than announcing the fact. An address was presented by his Honor the Snp«mtendent to Sir William and Lady Martin on ■ the occasion of their leaving for England. The address we have already published. During the reading of it by tas Honor, the main "Tof the wharf where the presentation took place was densely crowded by persons ' anxious to witness this
last mark of esteem on the part of the citizens of Auckland being paid to the venerable and much. - loved late Chief Justice and his lady. His Honor read |he address with much emotion, which was shared by the recipients and the bystanders. At the conclusion Sir William Martin replied in some well chosen words expressive of the; sorrow he and Lady Martin felt at leaving tneir friends in Auckland. Sir William referred to thirty-three years of residenceih Auckland, and : said he should always look back upon that time with hearfelt pleasure. During. Sir William's speech large number of friends of the departing, couple, who vsere standing round could not restrain their feelings. Even tear 3 were seen in the eyes of the sterner sex. The scene was most affecting Several old Maori women pressed forward and clung to Lady Martin as if they would not allow her to go. No doubt, poor creatures, they have lost their kindest benefactors. Before Sir William and Lady Martin went o"n board they were loudly and repeatedly cheered. In addition to his Honor the Superintendent, Sir George A. Arney, Bishop Cowie, Rev. C. M. Nelson, Beys. Mitchell, Drs. Kinder, Piu-chas, and Maunsell, and several other gentlemen assisted at the presentation.
