WELLINGTON DIOCESAN SYNOD.
A MAORI BANQUET.
(From Our Special Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON.
This day. The Diocesan Synod, which has boon holding its session several days, closed yesterday. A great Maori banquet was given last night at Donucker'a Hotel, by Mr Kenata, of Napier, to all the Maori chiefs now in the city. About*4o natives, principally chiefs, were present. . , ■ Mr Sheehan was in the chair, the vicechairs being occupied by Messrs Karaitiana and Henate Matua.
The only Europeans present were Messrs Sheehan, Bunny, Inglis, Kelly, M.G.A-; and Messrs Lundon, Willson, and G. M. Reed. ......
Apologies were read from Messrs Stafford, Fitzherbert, and others.
The banquet was very sumptuous, and the speeches of the chiefs, exceedingly denunciatory of the native legislation of the session. . Unquestionably great dissatisfaction has been caused by Mr McLean's latest development of Maori policy. The speeches were interspersed with Maori chants of a melancholy cast.
The festivities were kept up till a late hour.
