INQUEST.—This Day
An inquest was held this afternoon at the Terminus Hotel, before Dr Philson, M.D., coroner, and a jury on the body of Richard Phillips, who was found drowned. Richard Tucker deposed that he was a carpenter, residing in Newton, and that yesterday morning, while engaged on the wharf, he observed the body of d man floating, and went and informed ' Sergeant Baker of what he he had seen. He then assisted the constable in recovering the body. Sergeant James Baker immediately went to the spot, and by the aid of| last witness it was lifted into the boat, and conveyed to the dead house. He found the body in.a decomposed state. Randle C. Mainwaring deposed that he witnessed the accident on the morning of the 23rd, and informed Mr Carr, boat-builder, who immediately launched a boat, but before ne could reach the dingy one of the men had gone down. There was a very heavy sea at the time.
Dectective Jeffrey identified the body, and the jury, after a brief consultation, returned a verdict of " Found Drowned."
