NEWSPAPER WAR ABOUT THE SUPERINTENDENCE
INTERCOLONIAL RIFLE MATCH.
GRAHAMSTOWN
This day. A heavy hail-storm occurred last night at five.
The correspondence about Mr Dargarille's statements continues. One writer in answer to Mr Tyler's question of what are the deserts of the man who so far forgets himself, says, that "he should he burnt in effigy, after being well tarred and feathered, and that the postman who was going to burn Lusk should be made to act as hangman." At a meeting of the Rule Association last night correspondence was read from Australia relative to sending over representatives from New Zealand to compete at the intercolonial matoh at Melbourne. Wanganui agrees two send to men, and the Thames four, including the champion. It was determined to communicate with Major Atkinson and ask what Otago would do. A committee was appointed to take steps necessary to further the object. Mr T. L. Murray,; agent of the Bank of New Zealand, has been sued for a broach of the " Quartz Crushing Machines Inspection Act " by neglecting to make entries in tho register book, in the form provided by the schedulo. It appeared that no provision was made in the book supplied for dwts. and grains. The entries were thoreefore made in another book. The Magistrate had no option but to fine defendant £5.
No replies have yet been received from Auckland and Otago. Wellington declines on account of the expense. The Pumping Association water is all out, and men have resumed sinking. A letter appears in this morning's Advertiser denying that the Orangemen of Auckland had determined to issue a paper. The writer, " Lemon," says that the :paper was projected in the interests of Mr Dargaville. That various schemes for starting it .feel through, " but not before it had been held out as a threat to the proprietors of the Evening Star (Auckland) to induce them to support Mr Dargaville which they declined to do. [This statement is quite untrue.—Ed. E.S.] And now the last dodge is to sturfc the paper, with the statement that it is established by the united efforts of the Orangemen of the Thames and Auckland." [Tho paper referred to by the Advertiser's correspondent is neither to be issued by the Orangemen or by Mr Dargaville. It is projected in the interests of the Protestant Association. " Lemon" has written either a wilful untruth or has besn altogether misinformed.—Ed. E.S.] j
