111 the Legislative Council, yesterday, Dr. Pollen proposed, and Mr Taylor seconded, the second reading of the Auckland Improvement Bill.
It was opposed by Mr Chamberlain, wflP if characterised it as a job aiid a swindle. He said one of the Commissioners was a commission agent, and would get a large commission on the transaction, speciOcally mentioning Brown, Campbell & Co. 's property. _, |^ Dr Pollen replied, and warmly repudiatedvy/ the charge. He said the Commissioners were m giving time and trouble gratuitously, and had ij no pecuniary interest -whatever. ( Mr Chamberlain's opposition has no syni- | pathy or support. \. The Bill was referred to aselect committee, at which certain charges which are made against Mr Chamberlain, to the effootWtf
he offered to make arrangements with the Commissioners respecting lus vote, will be fnily investigated. TTTE LOAN BILL. The Government will probably incorporate in the Provincial Loan Bill a clause that tho provinces shall only borrow at six per cent, maximum, and that«U loans shall be iioated at par. MB STEVENS CASE. There is considerable interest felt in the case of Stevens, whose license was suspended in Hawke's Bay. KATTVE PETITION. The natives representing sections of most districts in the Forth Islands purpose petitioning the Upper House to throw out Mr McLean's native policy embodied in the Native Lands Reserve and Council Bills. This, it is considered, will be made a test measure, Petitions are ready for presentation.' GOLD MINING BILL. A motion to restore the Gold Mining Bill to the order paper introduced an amusing debate. It was carried on division b thirty-two against twenty-six. THE EDUCATION RILL was recommitted and discussed.
