Capt. Holmes has been engaged in the trade between Auckland and South for many years as commander of first-class steamers. He has a thorough knowledge of the requirements of a passenger trade, and his kindness and urbanity have won for him universal esteem, while his integrity has gained the respect and confidence of all acquainted with him. We ■wish him success in his new sphere. The agents of the steamship .Nebraska notify that a steamer will convey passengers, and baggage on board the mail steamer tomorrow morning, leaving the wharf at ten o'clock sharp. The barques Joliba and Mary Miller left simultaneously this morning for Newcastle. By a singular coincidence both these vessels •when last here left together for the same port. The s.s. Go-ahead arrived in the Manukau at a late hour last night. The ketch Clematis has cleared outwards for Napiex, w^th, a general cargo, including a quantity of tirriber, to be shipped atj Wangapoa. The schooner Merlin,, arid the /emitter Dido, have cleared outwards for Russell.

The:;Vß.B;i'St.. Kilda: left theL-M^nukau at 11. At this morning for Wanganui. The s.s. Rangatira left Tanr^nga at 7.30 this morning for Auckland.

We draw attention to this fact because a paragraph copied into our^is^ue.pf^Mo^day last from a Wellington paper'would- J6ad' to the" supposition that Captain 3£eenan was, concerned in the barratry, 1 a* 'statement 'which his many friends will be glad tp ip ,-quite unfounded.

TfiE St Kilda.—The Wanganui Chronicle of April Bth says : —This steamer will not return to this port before the end of July or the beginning of August, as she proceeds to Auckland after delivering her present freight at Onehunga. At Auckland sne will be dismantled, cut in two, and lengthened 24 feet ; have extensive improvements made in her machinery, by which an increase of speed will be secured ; and be put in such a state of thorough repair as to make her nearly as good as new in some respects, and infinitely better in others. Her owners will have to expend about £4000 on her to effect these alteration and repairs, besides foregoing the use of her for 4 months. Captain Plowerday will continue his command, and the alterations and repairs to the machinery and iron work will be carried out under the supervision of Mr Cundan, her engineer, whose plans for both repairs and alterations have been adopted by her owners.
