This day. The Independent denies that the Government proposed to employ the Auckland police as canvassers for assisted immigrants at £5 per head. The proposal of the Government was, that the Superintendent's opinion be; asked whether it was desirable, to employ the police to canvass for nominations at the same rate of allowance per head for arrivals as is now paid sub-immigration officers, namely I0s». for women and sa. for men. The idea has been abandoned. The Government has instructed the Agent-General to charter an improved class of immigrant vessels, and provide moro wholesome diet ; to place the hospitals on the upper deck, and generally to increase the accommodation and comfort of the passengers. Messrs Stafford, Rolleston and others: are here attending the Council of the University. Mr Reynolds will be thenew Colonial Secretary. The Post contends that Mr Eussell should be paid for enforcing the penalties against Mr Webb, otherwise Parliament may be asked to vote a handsome honorarium. The Post also censures TVJr Justice Johnston for political utterances from the Bench. The "Wellington Patent Slip Company meets this afternoon. The Provincial Government proposes \ to borrow r£210,000 by the issue of debentures! here or in Australia at an interest of not more than 5^ per cent, for public improvements, the loan to be secured upon the consolidated]fund, but charged against the revenue provincially derived from the proposed reclaimed land, any unsatisfied balance to be debited against the province.
