AUCKLAND IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION.
A speciajj meeting of the Auckland Improvement Commissioners was, held this day at noon. Present: P. A. Philips, Esq., R.M., (in the chair), Messrs Fenton, Macready, Lusk,! and Jones. ' The object of calling the meeting was! for the purpose of opening tenders for the formation of Coburg-street, Bowen-street, ai|d a portion of Victoria Quadrant. Five tenders were received, namely, ,W. Alcock, £6250 ; R. C. Jordon,' £5485; D. Falloon, £6349 ; W. Blewden, £5929 ; John Taylor, £6914. ,■ i The estimated cost of the \vork was set down by. Mr Anderson, the City Surveyor, at £6600. , ~ t : ; On the motion of Mr Macready, seconded by Mr Jones, the tender of Mr R. Blewden for £5,929 was accepted, providing \ the securities are satisfactory. ' ' ' The Chairman called the attention"©! the meeting to Major Gordon's advertisement.in . reference to the practice of Volunteers, j He thought there must be some misconception on the part of the officer commanding tha .volunteers .'in ,the district, as there*was no wish to deprive them of the use of the ground so long as it remains available for pracjtice"." He would suggest that the Secretary shjould ; write a letter to the Major to that effect. Mr Fenton replied that it was well known permission would be granted for the use of the ground upon application to the Commissioners. In .his opinion, Major Gordon's, action in the matter was childish, and he would oppose any correspondence Being opened on the subject. Other commissioners assented, and the
matter dropped,
