WATER SUPPLY.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —I consider that the debate at the last meeting of the city councillors, with reference to the water supply, is quite sufficient argument against the Council having anything to do with it. The delightful state of iridecision and uncertainty existing in the minds of the councillors was quite edifying. One councillor advocates Nihotupu, another the Western Springs ; one estimates the cost at £40,000, another at £100,000. One sapient gentleman recommends making a reservoir and laying the mains, andthenlooking about for the water, probably from the moon or Aldgate pump. One councillor had the impertinence to say that they should ignore public opinion in the matter. After such an exhibition I think that the public cannot be blamed if they do not exactly see the fun of spending £100,000 on such a mare's nest. Let a public company take up the affair, as they will no doubt do it much cheaper, and the public will then not have the chance of imagining that some of our councillors are less actuated by sanitai-y considerations than by the hope of greasing their palms with the expenditure.—Yours, &c., Nemo.
