This clay. The barque Chattanooga has arrived from New York via Dunedin. Two thousand cases of kerosine per Chattanooga changed hands at 2s lid per gallon in bond. Cement has been sold to arrive per Grlenloraat 18s Gd per barrel. Bottled ale and stout are very scarce. Sales of good brands to arrive have been made at 12s per dozen. Newcastle coal is now quoted at 40s, but a fall in price is expected to take place next week. Arrived at nine to-day—Dakota. She sails North about one. The South British Insurance shareholders met yesterday. Mr Nathan, of Christchurch, was present, and strongly opposed the issuing of new shares. A resolution was carried in favour of issuing 12,500 new shares, at 15s premium, principally to new shareholders, by five to four, the majority of those present not voting. Mr Nathan is actively collecting proxies against the proposal, and goes per Dakota to Auckland.

Mr Justice Johnston proceeds to-day to Auckland in the Dakota, to preside over the April business in the absence of Chief Justice Sir George A. Arney. Mr Justice Greason will sit at the Wanganui sessions. The female immigrants per Charlotte Gladstone were engaged at 10s to 15s per week. Miss Aitken proceeded to Nelson yesterday to give readings. The General Government invite tenders for the Brumner and Greymouth Railway, receivable till April 15.
It is generally believed here that Mr Vogel will decline the Premiership. The commission of inquiry relative to the Charlotte Gladstone attribute the mortality to the lowphysiqne to the immigrants, and want of proper medical inspection before embarkation. The Government intend to proceed against Shaw, Saville. & Co., for breach of contract. Only about two-thirds of the legal allowance of water was issued. The captain admitted that he had only two days, supply of fresh water on arrival, although they had only an average passage. There was also only one ton of coal for cooking, and the tanks were defective, and leaked so much that three weeks' supply of water was lost. The condensing apparatus was defective. Only onefourth the proper quantity of soap was placed on board. The Government have addressed a strong memorandum to the Agent-General against sending private passengers' in the same vessel with single female Government immigrants, as tending to prevent discipline. Mr Fox returns to town next week. Messrs Sewell, Moorehouse, and Webb are expected to contest the seat for Lyttelton. The Auckland Isles have been leased by Mr Moncton.
M. B. Hart, from Christchurch, is exhibiting Malvern Hills coal, and is endeavouring to induce the Government to construct the Malvern Hills railway.
The number of deaths at Wellington during the month of February was twenty-two, twelve being children.
