We are authorised to state, with reference to our remarks of yesterday, relative to the private hexes, that the present hours only continue in force for a few weeks—until the messengers' quarters in the temporary building are ready for occupation. It has no doubt been found difficult during the past few weeks to arrange the many details necessary to the proper conduct of the office, and to bring everything into smooth working order ; and the accident which the office messenger met with, and his consequent illness and absence from duty, must have seriously interfered with the usual routine of business. So soon as the messenger resides on the premises the former hours will he resumed, i.e., 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. We think our readers will agree with us that " the convenience of the business community" is constantly studied, and that but for the exceptional circumstances in which the department has been placed " Mercator " would have had no reason for penning his letter. An eccentric! gentleman in New York has had his house painted black as a token of grief for the loss of his wife.
