FALSE PRETENCES
Mr J. S. Macfarlane was subpoenaed as a witness in this case of William Wigley Moffatt, but was not present at its commencement. Mr Brookfield stated that Mr Macfarlane would not attend. Detective Ternahan proved the service of the subpoena on the 14th ult. Mr Joy askod for an adjournment of the trial, which was granted. Mr Macfarlane then entered the Court, but no further proceedings were taken. A man named H. L. S. Brooking was arraigned for a similar offence. He was charged with obtaining refreshments to the amount of £5, and £1 7s in money from Mr Morrison, hotel-keeper of Tauranga. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
HORSE STEALING,
Pani, an aboriginal native, was arraigned upon an indictment charging him with stealing a horse at Tauranga, but as there were a great number of native witnesses, His Honor adjourned the case until this morning.
