TREES FOR THE NORTH SHORE.
(To the Editor of the Evextnu Star.)
Sir, —During the late holidays the question has been often asked in Auckland, " Where shall Aye go to-morroAV ? and the majority Avould vote for the North Shore, only there are no beautiful cool shady trees to shelter us from the broiling sun. Had this gi-eat Avant been supplied ten years ago the North Shore would now have been the favourite resort of Aucklanders. The beautiful run over the Avater, the small expense, the commanding vieAvs, and the short distance are all in its favour only for families picnicing there is no shelter. If the North Shore people Avant their stores, gardens, steamers and other enterprises to pay they cannot better insure it than by planting trees on every vacant spot of land along the beach, on reserves, foot and round the Flagstaff hill; indeed, it would pay them to lay out a few acres as a visitor's retreat. Will your, sir, in the interests of the hardworking Aucklanders urge our North Shore friends to remedy this great want as quickly as possible ; and Avhere they have ten visitors iioav they Avill then have a hundred.—l am, &c., Shady.
[We cordially commend the suggestions of our correspondent. Everything that contributes to recreation, enjoyment, and the gratification of the aesthetic feelings ie, in the case of that district, as thoroughly practical and utilitarian as is culvert making and bridge building in ordinary nival districts.—Ed. E.S.]
