THE HERO IN QUARANTINE.
CAPTAIN LOGAN'S EEPLY TO THE TESTI-
MONIAL
Captain Logan, of the steamship Hero, has replied to tho testimonial forwarded him by the citizens of Auckland through his Worship the Mayor in the following terms : —
S.S. Hero (iv quarantine), Port Jackson, 16th August, 1872. To his "Worship the Mayor of Auckland, and other gentlemen signing the testimonial. Gentlemen,— In gratefully acknow-, ledging the flattering expressions of regard and sympathy you addressed to me on the 2nd instant, I beg to assure you that I have difficulty in finding suitable terms in which fully to express the gratitude, and perhaps pardonable pride, which T. feel in reading this testimonial, and the numerous, respected, and familiar names attached to it. I can never forget the people of Auckland having thus come forward like one man to sympathise with mo in my misfortune, shewing that though out of sight I am not out of mind with them. This memento of brotherly feeling has touched me deeply, besides relieving me of a heavy depression of spirits, which I trust may never again be caused by such misrepresentations as those you allude to. In conclusion, gentlemen, I have only to say that it shall ever be my endeavour to prove myself worthy of the regard you have so generously accorded me. and I now look forward with feelings of no ordinary pleasure to the time when I shall have the- good fortune once again to be able to shake hands with those whom I am proud to have the privilege of including amongst my sincere friends. I remain, gentlemen, Yours faithfully, (Signed) Thomas Logan, Master s.s. Hero. The Hero was announced to be liberated from quarantine on Monday last, the 19th inst. when she would immediately proceed to Melbourne, and there undergo a thorouh overhaul and repainting before being again put upon the berth. Captain Logan is sure to be heartily welcomed in Auckland when he makes his re-appearance with the favorite steamer Hero.
