MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.
To the Editor of _he*EVENiNG Star
Slß,— To-day is the very depth of winter— the shortest and presumably the coldest day ; gnd yet to-day, would it be believed, there is n o fire in either of the reading-rooms of the above Institute, and the subscribers have to git in a wretchedly cold barn, wbere they are jlmost frozen. Is this neglect on the part of the Secretary, or is it poverty on the part of the Institution ? At all events, the sooner it j 9 remedied the better. -I am, &c., A StTBSCEIBEK. [This Institution is not to be judged by ordinary standards.— "Ed. E.S.]
