TWO SETTLERS FIRED UPON BY NATIVES.

(feom tiie "heeai/d.") Alexandra, Jan. 31, 11.55 a.m. Last Saturday, Te Tapihana visited Whitiora Hauturu, and requested that he would join him in a raid upon the Alexandra settlement. Whitiora replied that the King would not sanction it. Te Tapihana said he would go out on Ins own account. A private warning was given last night that Tapihana and eight followers were out bent on mischief.

Precautions were taken by the commanding officer, and also by the settlers, on the warning being received

9 p.rn,

Two settlers have just arrived from Pirongia, having been out pigeon shooting. They report that they were fired upon by three natives whom they saw. The Europeans ran, and were followed about two hundred yards outside the bush. Twelve shots in all were fired at them. The Europeans say they had no idea that the natives were in that part of the bush.

A messenger went up to Tapihana's camp on Pirongia, this morning, and found Tapihaua and his party away.
