To the Editor of tho Evening Star.
Sik, —I d.) not want to review the decision of the Ui-nch on Saturday last, in the case of liegina v. Giilliths and Kills; but in the interests of the public, 1 ask that you will allow ii.o io draw attention to a few points. In the decision of Court, I find reported in the Herald the following, i'rjin the magistrate presiding :—" It is eh-ar the defendant was aware of the character of the parly with whom he was connected, which'bus left his conduct open to suspicion." Will the police take any notice of this remark from the Bench? Were the defendants aware that Harris uas an abscouder? Did they know that he had embezzled money from Victoria? Was money received from him, knowing how he had obtained it, even though it had been honorably won in the noble game of billiards ? Could Mr. Holmes, and waterman Strong, and some others give a little more information on the subject if properly pressed ? J^Or even supposing that they were wholly ignorant of the circumstances of the embezzlenic-iit, and of the "character of the person with whom they were connected," to whom does the money belong that was won in billiards from the embezzler, and. admitted to have been received by " the partners ?" Toll amis? or " the partners " ? or the Bulla Shire Council ? These are questions that are frequently put in the city since Saturday evening, they should, bo noted by the police, and they are deserving of ventilation by the Press, without fear or favor. Ido not pretend to question the justice of the decision of the magistrates on the matter brought before them, but on the subjects above stated, the public desires a little more
Light.
