THE ACCIDENT TO THE LORD ASHLEY.
The ~Ly'ttelton Times speaking, of the acci* dent to'the' Lord Ashley, says :—After clearing- the HeadpjShe, experienced a'strong > so|ith9_-|y gale/accompanied ;by heavy sea; "at-9.30 a.m. the crank shaft broke, and the vessel was put under sail. The wind was very strong and squally from southward, with a heavy sea, so' she ran for Lyttelton, aud after sighting the lighthouse let go her anchor ten miles outside the Heads. We understand that-the Ashley is how-awaiting orders.
The fojlqwiiig testimonial was presented to Captain _BJ. Wheeler, of the s s. Lord Ashley,, .by the passengers of that vessel, on leaving her .on .Saturday : —"We, the undersigned .passengers per s.s. Ashley, from Wellington* to Otago,>beg.:tQ congratulate you and your officers on the, -Beamanhke conduct which you1 displayed in bringing your ship into Lyttelton'; underrcanvas, the machinery 'having become' disabled during a gale off Timarh.7 •.
