The evening Star. FRIDAY, JUNE, 1870.
-At the meeting of the-Chamber of Commerce yesterday, a' lengthened report was brougat up on the subject of the Graving Dock, and one relating to the stoi age of gunpowder and -kerosene. A petition was resolved on to the House of JKepresentatives forthe removal of restrictions on kerosene, but as there are no such restrictions we presume the House will not be moved in the matter. One gentlemati told a Baron Munchausen kind of story about a gunpowder waggrn being sOloivn up ten miles away, from a match dropping on the end of a little tail it had left behind it.
In the City Board yesterday, after the bnsiness reported in last issue, the members considered the Municipal Hill, the committee recommended that no suburb should be included without the consent of its inhabitants, and that the Act for the city should emanate from the General Assembly; but on all heads it was conceeded that the big bill submitted to w^m was too ponderous. Minor matters were discussed and the accounts passed.
In the Police Court, to-day, three wretched-looking women and two men were punished for getting drunk; another person has been nabbed and charged with assisting in illegally furnishing the domicile of the " ladies" in Chancery-street, and has been placed in reserve for Monday next, when the two kind-hearted prisoners will stand side by side against an unsympathising community. A charge against the cook of the Schiehallion, of having thrown ship's stores overboard, was pretty severely dealt with, the Bench observing that there seemed a .growing impression with men on board ship, that on tbe.ir coming into port here they may ■do as they like. The cook certainly pays dearly for the pleasure of shieing over his old potatoe chopper. A really good joke has been perpe trated by some wag in Dedwood. Be it known that in that remote region there is a diversity of opinion as to the proper method of making the roads, and feeling runs high ; some holding that but the central portion should be made at once and macadamised, others that the whole width should be prepared for the future layers of scoria. A goodly stretch of the Tonsonby Hoad has been subjected to the latter treatment, which appears to be the system finding favor with the stronger party in the Highway Board. The portion selected is very flat, and under the influence of the late rains the lumps have been nicely melted; but in order to appreciate the humour of the wag it requires to be seen. In strolling by that way, we came upon the following poster on every gate and wall" : —"To Let.— Cheap for Potato Garden.—That part of Ponsonby Road between Franklyn-street and College .Road, better known as Jones' Folly.—Possession guaranteed for twelve months.—Apply to «. Jones, Esq., Factotum and Major Domo of the Deadwood Highway Board."
We regret that we have not space enough for a detailed report of Madame Winter's concert in the City Hall. The building was filled with, apparently, the elite of the city ; the vocalization and instrumentation, was excellent; Madame Winter's own performances really charmidg: and the most thorough satisfaction universally expressed.
A teet pleasing annual party was given last night in the Music Hall by Mrs. Lewis, to her pupils and friends. Music, sinking, and, of course, dancing, with merry laughter and warm young hearls, made the hours speed merrily and pleasantly away; while the eye was charmed at the galaxy of girlish loveliness that is yet to develop into the beauty and the fashion of our cifvy. Mb. J. J. Nbave will deliver a lecture this evening in the rooms of the Young Men's Christian' Association. Subject: A Visit to the Isles ot the Pacific in the Missionary Ship John Williams.
