BANKS PENINSULA BRANCH MEETING National Emcigency Precautions Delegates Appointed A meeting of the Banks Peninsula branch of the N.Z. Fanners' Union was held at Duvauchelle Hall on Tuesday evening when the president, Mi D. Kay, presided over a small attendance. Apologies were received from Messrs C. E. Kay. T. Masefield F. BrocKerie, jas. Mould, Kelly and D, N. Waghorn. Mr E. C. Webb of French Farn: was elected a member. Outward anu inward, coirespondentia was read and approved. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr R. W. Kelly and family in their recent sad bereavement. In reference to the meeting to discuss organisation in connection with national emergency precautions, called by the AkaroK County Council, at Duvauchelle on Saturday, October 14, it was decided the president (Mr D. Kay) and the two vice-presidents (Messrs R. Donovan and C. J. Marshall) represent the branch and assist in any action taken in the matter. The motion was Reposed by Mr R. Bruce and seconded l.»y Mr T. W, Weir. Petrol Tax Rebate The president reported having attended the Provincial branch meeting in August when petrol rebates for farm uses was discussed, also a scheme for cooperative buying for farmers. He said a letter had been received from the Waimairi Branch protesting against the increase of 4d per gallon in the petrol tax. It was stated by the branch members of the County Council who were present at the'r meetings, said that an additional a 4 v-st would be required tc run the Council on account of the additional 4d per gallon tax. This would require to be passed on to the farmer through 111■'ixastd rates, which would have uO oe borre by him on top of his own increased running costs and increased transport and haulage charges Other members spoke in support of the V;-tiMsi'! piotest. The Chairman said if the tax, so far as the fanner was concerned, could be restricted to the petrol used in his car, t would not be a hardship and he believed that machinery used for agricultural purposes should be eAtiiij/.. It was eventually resolved, on tht motion of Messrs Fleming and Kay to write to the Hon. D. G. Sullivar pointing out the hardship which woul'. be imposed through this tax bearing on petrol used in tractors, trucks milking planto etc. used entirely foi agricuituial eposes. The Branch decided on the motioi of Mr A. M. Helps, seconded by Mi Weil to write to Mr T. H. McComb: M.P. on the m<- +ter.
