AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL

NEW BRIDGE FOR PIPER'S VALLEY Satisfactory Rates Payments The monthly meeting of the council was held at Duvauchelle on Friday when there were present Councillors C. B. Thacker (chairman), Jos. Hayward, A. R. Haylock, 0. A. Thelning, S. J. Vogan and E. Hay. Abolition of Riding Accounts The special order abolishing liding accounts was duly passed by the council. Welcome to Councillor Vogan Councillor Vogan thanked members of the council for their sympathy with him in his recent illness, the chairman welcoming him back to his seat at the council table. Bridge in Piper's Valley Councillor Hayward reported that a bridge leading into Mi A. J. Cunningham's property, Pipers Valley, had been * ashed away some years ago and a temporary bridge had been put up. It was necessary now to renew the temporary bridge, as it was in a bad condition. He suggested a one-way bridge about eight foot wide. A twenty-foot | span was requiied he said and concrete abutments would have to be put in. Councillor E. Hay suggested using 11. iron stringers as wooden stringers weie deat and the iron stringers, set in concrete would be everlasting. These iron stringers had been used at Pigeon Bay. It was decided to see Mr Jas. Tlayward about renewing this bridge, the- matter being left in Councillor Hay lock's hands. Industrial Disputes The N.Z. County Council's Industrial union of Employers notified that i.o county councils were cited in the motor mechanics dispute and the metal Trade's Employees disputes. Auctioneer's Licenses Messrs H. Mat-son and Co. notified that they had applied for an auctioneer's license in the Akaroa County. It was decided to approach the N.Z. Farmers' Co-op Association who had promised to take out a license in the county this year. Hospital Board Levies The North Canterbury Hospital Board wrote asking the Concil to continue its monthly payments to the Board, though the expenditure required for the coming year had not yet been decided. The clerk reported that Mr R. A. Mould had reported the Board would expend £67,000 for nurses accommodation and in the near future would have to extend their hospital buildings to the extent of about£soo,ooo. The hospital accommodation was taxed to its limit and there were between two and three hundred patients always on the waiting list. The Board did not knew who was going to pay for it and how the social security legislation would affect hospital board finance in the future. Plunket Conference The members of the Duvauchelle branch of the Plunket Society wrote thanking the council for use of the council chambers for their recent meet ing of Banks Peninsula delegates. Tank for Wainui House Mr W. Timothy, sub-foreman at Wainui applied for a new water tank at the Wainui house. It was left to the, clerk to get quotation for a concrete tank. Foreman's Report The foreman, Mr W. O'Brien reported the staff had got out stone on the Summit road, 400 yards being crushed and spread besides the metal secured by contract. The grader had been grading all riding roads. He asked what "vyas to be done regarding the Wainui creek. The Wainui Valley road was definitely the worst road in the County. Wainui Valley Road Councillor Hayward said he considered the only solution at Wainui was a stop band to stop the water getting on to the road. He did not believe they should go on to private property at all. The chairman agreed with councillor Hayward's views. Councillor Thelning said if the cieek were turned it would probably flood the buildings by the post office and hall. The council inspected the locality at the conclusion of the meeting. Noxious Weeds Clearing The foreman said he had two men working on the gorse and the Kaik and Children's Bay roads had been cleared and they were working at Takamatua at present. The gorse on the Summit Road, near the Cabstand, was very bad and would have to be cut back. Councillor Hayward said he considered Mr D. Curry should assist in clearing some of his frontage and it was decided to see him in reference to clearing this gorse. Councillor Thelning said there was blackberry on the old Takamatua Valley Road and gorse had been grubbed on this Road. It was decided to notify the North Canterbury Hospital Board that the Council would clear their frontage on the Lighthouse road. The foreman said there was really not much more noxious weeds clearing to do on frontages. It was decided to take steps to have the gorse at Long Bay top cleared. Long Bay Road Metal The foreman said the men could get 50 yards of metal required at j

Long Bay top off the roads there. The extra metal was required. Pigeon Bay Road It was decided to take off a bad rocky point on Pigeon Bay road and get a supply of metal for the road at the same time. Rocks on Summit Road Councillor Hay drew attention to a stone on the Summit road near the Pigeon Bay top, and to other stones nearer the Hill Top. The foreman said when the Summit Road was gradeed these stones would be; shot out. In answer to Councillor Hayward the foreman stated that the tractor driver was in charge of the grading and he gave instructions to him. Correspondence The monthly Health Department report was i*ead and received. The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs wrote thanking the council for its co-operation during physical fitness week. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote regarding the promotion of local bills. The Automobile Association of Canterbury notified they had forwarded two signs for the Summit RoadDuvauchelle road which they asked the council to erect. The Labour Department wrote citing the council for amendment of the General Labourer's award, under which an increase of 10/- per week was demanded for permanent labourers and 7/6 per week for casual labourers. Heavy Traffic Fees The Christchurch City Council forwarded £286 18s lOd heavy traffic fees for the half year ended February 28th The distribution for the Peninsula Road Boards were: Le Bons Bay £26 3s 2d, Okains Bay £50 13s Bd. Pigeon Bay £40 15s 4d. The Mount Herbert County share was £48 18s Od and Wairewa County share £108 Is Bd. Crusher Engineer's Report Mr R. Mcßobie, crusher engineer, reported as follows:— "Since my last report I have finished crushing at Le Bons Bay and crushed there 1814* yards of metal. We are now crushing on the Summit Road, crushed Hammond's heap of met ill of 206 yards. Shifted the crusher to a heap of metal further along, so far we have put through 250 yards of metal there. There is about another 1.50 yards to do there." Sub-Foremen's Reports The sub-Toremen's reports are as follows:— "Since your last meeting have finished grading. Cleaned culverts and cut offs on Brocherie's road, Hickory and Goughs Bay roads. Am now on Fisherman's Bay road. R. Gilbert." "Work done since your last meeting consists of finishing the dressing he Stoney Bay road on this .side of the hill. We cut back all overhanging trees and re-decked one culvert. We have dressed up the bottom end of the Flea Bay road and have carted filling on to all the rocky places nnd will be over on this side of the hill on Friday. J. Sunckell." Ranger's Report The ranger's report was read and ■•eceived. The amount due by the Le Bons Bay Road Board was £528 for crushing metal and £151 was due from the Akaroa Borough. This left the council with a credit of between £400 and £500 at the end of the financial year.
