"THE GAY DIVORCEE" Guy Hoklen, an American dancer, after a whirl amongst the cafes of Paris, is returning to London with his close Friend, Egbert Fitzgerald, a mincing young English barrister. Quite by accident on the journey to England, he encounters a charmingyoung American girl who is with her aunt, a friend of Egbert Fitzgerald. He endeavours to learn her name, but is unsuccessful. This is the beginning of a high speed romance. In London Guy actually encounters the mysterious Mimi. Guy falls in love with her at once, but she snubs him and lie does not even learn her lust name. He tries during the remainder of the adventure to find her and win her. A half-dozen times Guy sees Mimi in England, only to be rebuffed and eluded, even when he proposes to her on a country lane where he has overtaken her. What complicates the pursuit is that Egbert Knows Mimi and could have arranged a proper introduction, but has not the dimmest idea that she is Guy's elusive flame. Egbert, in fact, has been retained by Mimi, through her aunt, the flighty Mrs Glossop, to cause a diplomatic break between Mimi and one Rupert to whom Mimi has pledged herself. The only method of which the stupid Egbert can think of is to make Rupert jealous by hiring one Tonetti, a gigolo, to stage a tryst with Mimi at a beach hotel.
All this is unknown to Guy who. however, encounters the girl in the r ballroom of the hotel, where she falls in love with him, and causes her to • hope doubly for the success of her ) plot to discourage Rupert. Just then a shock conies to her as she conceives that Guy is really the hired gigolo, a . thought that wounds her and makes , her vindictive towards Guy. By a stroke of chance Guy manages . to arrive at the artificial tryst ahead i ox Tonetti, with the aim of protecting Mimi from intrusion; and when Tonetti arrives, a three-cornered situation i of misunderstanding ensues which be- ; comes the peak of the story's uproarious episodes. i 1S on] y when Rupert comes, lured tnere to get his dose of heartbreak, that the relationship of all parties is disclosed. Rupert, moreover, rei fuses to care what Mimi does, and is. to boot, exposed as a philanderer whom Mimi could have thrown over with a clear conscience. Guy and Mimi, much relieved, become affianced: while Mrs Glossop, who has been conducting a chase of her own after the reluctant Egbert, is revealed as having captured and married him.
