Tuesday, March 10, 1936. THE POTATO JUSTIFIED.

Recently the. League of Nations was instrumental in bringing down a report on the physiological bases of nutrition in various foods. The report was prepared at the. instigation of Mr Bruce, the Australian delegate with the idea of urging' people to eat food necessary for health and fitness. After stressing the need of consumption of 1000,000,000 more gallons of milk in Britain the report goes on to point out the value of the potato in the genera! diet). The potato which has been described a 9' a ball of starch is now found to provide extra Vitamin C 1 and more calicum ■ and phosphorus than can be obtained from cereails. The choice, ol the Irish people, in making the potato their main food is justified and when enjoying the flavour of well! cooked -potatoes the public can console themselves with the thought that they are assisting to build up fitness. Another point of interest to fishermen is the recommendation that children and l nursing mothers should take more fish-liver oil to supplement Vitamin D in their food.
