A meeting of th'ite Council' was held ( hi Wednesdlay- evening: Present Cr. i F. Davits, Deputy Mayor, in> the chair, s indi Councillors 1 Hoffman, Bruce, T. i H. Mlorcom, Williams, Aldtidge and ] W. The Chairman said that the Council could not: tet the oiacasio-n pass without congratulating Cr. WMHliams and Mrs Williams upon celebrating their golden wedding. They knew Cr. William's h'aidi taken a. great deal oif interest in afliL local 'body work and Mrs Williams bad worked during the war for <aill patriotic purposes and since then for many other good causes He felt the Council could) not let the oocaisionr pass without joining others in wilshinig Cr. and Mn& Wililiams long life, healDth and bappinesis m all, joined in 'the good wishes. Cr. Williams thanked thie Chairman for his remarks. A lot of good things bad l been said 1 ajbouit him tihe last feiw days and l 'he d'i'cD not feel he was worthy of them. He had tried to dio Ms 'best to pulb'lilc matters and he -would continue tio do. so. He referred to the remark that. Mrs Wff.liams had done a great deal oif puibl'rc work. Mrs Williams had always taJken* ,the keenest interss<t in the work for the orphanages. She always' had the greatest sympathy with orphans and the work of helping them was a. pleasure to her.. A rem'Jt was received from the Blenheilm Borough Council suggesting the postponement olf sinking fundis on loans .for twoi yeans to, assist, ratepayers. All other expenditure bad ibeen cut dloiwri and the 1 unemployment was causing imore expenditure to the Boroughs in, the way of supervM'on. The Clerk said' it woulld not. affect the Borough very'mulch. C'r. Bruce said it opened up this question as the postponement mighit affect the interest on some loans ad l versely. The Clerk said that £198 was paid in sinking fundis of which the Banks Peninsula iPo.wer Board fou'nd £82. Cr. Ald'ridlge said that he would fliike to see the latter held over tilU Ithey were conversant with the con' tents of the letter. He moved to thai effect.
