AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Akaroai and Wainuii Road Board was held at the Council Chambers, Duvauchelle on Saturday when: there were present' 'Messrs A. Haylock (chairman), Jos Hayward, S. J. Vogan, K. Macphail and A. A. Narbey. EASTERN 'BAYS CRUSHING. The Chairman' said the Akaroa County Council could not let the Board 1 have the'ir lorry with the crush er to crush metal in Eestern Bays. It was very necessary they should have a lorry as they could not spare the horses from' the different sentions. The clerk said the crusher was finishing up crushing metal on Barry's Bay main road and would then crush a small amount of metal 1 at Duvauchelle. It would l then be available to go over to> the Eastern Bays- to crush. :Mr 'Hayward l suggested 1 they might I use the tractor to cart the metal, •using drays. It was decided the 1 clerk communicate with Mr Leeder, Engineer, Wairewa; County Council and find out if ' •Mr Williamson, who had a shingle contract with the 'County had a lorry j available. j Mr Hayward 1 said he thought it • would be cheaper to use the tractor I if possible rather than get a lorry. He hacl seen drays converted for use' in this way and for tipping the metal. The tractor would only lie ! id'le if they did' not use it for carting this metal. ' j •It was mentioned that there was j a four-wheeled' truck that ce.ukl be : used for carting metal at the Council yard and l the Crusher Engineer • could advise them whether it could j be made suitable' for carting the. metal. An inspection of this vehicle was made by memibers of the Board and i't was considered it would be difficult to handle on narrow roads. SUPERVISION OiF GRADER. The condition of the -grader after it had returned- from the Wainui section was referred to and it was, considered it had got badly out of repair. It should be under the super- 1 vision of a man while working. Mr Hayward said the wire rope wi'th the tractor had broken twice a lid 'they should point this out to j the firm who sold it.

HEAVY BLINDING. Mr Vogan said heavy blinding had j been done on some of the roads which had been metalled and this made them dangerous. It was dejcided to instruct the foreman not to blind so heavily. ©RIDGES. The Chairman reported there was cement and decking over from the Robinson's Bay bridge and it was decided to have it stored at Duvauchelle. Mr Hayward said the bridge at Robinson's Bay wanted raising and new railings on it. He had spoken to the chairman about it. Mr J. Woodill would carry out the work. He asked if the decking on the bridge at the Kaik had been tarred and sanded, 'because he thought it should be. • It was considered' the decking should be tarred. The : Chairman said the Kaik bridge was just finished and Mr Woodill was painting it. UNEXPENDED LOAN; MONEY. The Chairman said there was £160 yet to expend on the (Stoney Bay roads and' others out of loan and it was a question whether 'shey should extend the formation on 'the Stoney Bay road. There were plenty of culverts orn this road. The clerk • sard the' unexpended Loan' moneys were :—• : Barry's Bay-Tikao Rd. £17 P. Brocherie's road £20 Bossu culverts! £20 Long Bay- Gough's etc. £27 Stoney 'Bay road £7G Tital £160 The 'Chairman said this money should be 1 expended as it was only lying at the Bank. Mr M'acphail said culverts were badly required oni Bossu road and it was left to him to see they were- put in. | BO'UiND'ARY ROAD AGREEMENT. The Chairman said he thought the Board should have am agreement signed with the Wairewa County Council about the boundary roads. It was decided to ask Wairewa >

County to draw up the agreement and have it signed. • TREE PLANTING. The 'Clerk reported that the Akaroa -County Council x would' pay half grubbing" of the gorse on the top of Long Bay read and buy trees for planting there if the Board would plant them. The Chairman said' their men were busy taking off corners on the outer Bays in preparation for the crusher and 1 lie thought they should get some one to plant the trees. It was decided' to try and arrange for a man to do the planting. Metal Con-tracts. Three applications were received for progress payments on metal spa-lling contracts. The' clerk said the measurements had been made and it was decided the payments be made. FOREMEN'S .REPORTS. The: foremen's reno.rts' were read as under :— T. I.c Comte, Duvauchelle, reports : "Since last; meeting we 1 finished th? culverts on -PawsoiT's" Valley roacl. Were three days knapping and carting metal -from Duvauchelle's qua.rry to spread over culverts -and l on road whore .creek had l scoured. Also filled pot-holes between. l old smithy and factory on Barry's Bay flat. We had the Council's lo.rry to cart metal for Donovan's road but had some wet weather at the time and only got two full days in with 7 loads per day and l two loads another day. As the Council forerr»an' needed the lorry we were unable to finish. We were three days raking in metal and blinding it on> new Pigeon Bay .road and one day putting on screenings. Since grad'er has 'been, repaired we have graded Moore's road' and from' old smithy up Barry's (Bay hii'L and Oid Pigeon Bay .roadi as far as Kelly's road. Expect to finish old 1 road this week. j Re bridge at Tikao—This bridge, ' looking - from underneath appears to be in good 1 order. The hole reported at last meeting was- in the approach from Wainui side and in my opinion this would l not c?.N'y a great deaf of heavy traffic. For the time being I filled hole in with stones." ' C. T. E. .Stewart, Wainui, reports : i "'S'inice your last meeting we have .graded all .roads but had to leave a ' part of Jubilee and 1 from top bridge om valley up to F. G. A. Wright's. We have cleaned all' outlets and mouths of culverts and cutouts on Land's

End, Maguinnes's, Bossu, Valley, Cemetery and Jubilee from C. Humm's down to the bottom and. all on main road. When wet weather was on aii'd 1 had' to leave grading we crowned the top part of Jubilee and cleaned all water channels- and culverts on same. We are now fixing entrance to paddock and put wider gate on as the other one was too narrow. I would also like to report that the piece of road Ave had to take over going round the back of Bossu has only 1 culvert in it as the others are all blocked and decking is rotten and have fixed entrance on this side of Bossu."

W. 'Shadbolt, Akaroa, reports "iSinice last meeting I dressed up Narbey's road, Long Bay and took off three corners- on that road and extended a culvert and took off the rockey corner a,nd stacked all the stone ready for the crusher. I put in three pipe culverts on the Long

Bay road' also took a corner off that road. lam now working on Paua Bay road. I have been to Hickory and measured Hammond's stone hea'p and' it measures 45 long 18 feet wide and 6 feet high' and 1 measured 1 Gibb's heap on the Long Bay, Narbeys and it measured' 48 feet 1 long and 22 feet wide and' 6 feet high and I also measured 1 C. Rhodes on Long Bay •roads, 38 feet long, 19 feet wide and -i feet high." j RANGER'S REPORT. j The ranger reported re stock jcaught on the roads for the month. On one occasion he had been told' to collect driving fees and' this payment had been refused later. 'He wanted to know i'f he had any recourse. It was decided the Board 1 could not assist the ranger i.ni the matter. FINANCE REPORT. I The Clerk said there were SB9O yards of metal to be broken; in Long Bay, Gcugh's and Hickory. The crusher's average breaking was about H2CO yards per month. It was decided Mr 'Macphail' make errcjuiries in regard' to a suitable vehicle for carting metal and to come to a definite decision in regard to same on the following Saturday when the conference to consider abolishing the Road' Boards would be held.
