| Tales of I Banks Peninsula. "Talcs of Banks Peninsula" by the late H. C. .Jacob-son, who collected the early records from the original participants in our early settlement, is a book of great interest as an historical record. A valuable contribution by the late Canon J. W. Stack deals with the Maori History of the South Island Tribes, and the famous raids of Te Rauparaha and the history of the tribes who inhabited the Peninsula. The story of the French Settlement at Akaroa and the Proclaiming of Sovereignty over the South Island at Akaroa by Captain Stanley, R.N., just before the French arrived is told with documentary evidence and at I length. Governor Hobson's secret letter of instructions to Captain Stanley which was not available for publication till 1910 and Captain Stanley's report on the new settlement are valuable additions. Hempleman's purchase ■of Akaroa, the arrival of the first English 1 ships, the Onawe Massacre, Stories of the early settlers and the Bays are given in detail.
