LOCAL AND GENERAL.
'Captain Bollons, master of the Government steam?r Tutanekai, died in Wellington on Wednesday after a fortnight's illness. He was taken ill at sea and put into a private hospital in Wellington. Captain Bollons was well known and esteemed in Akaroa where he has a number of friends.
The Canterbury Country Football team beat the Golden 1 Bay-Motueka team at Takaka, Nelson by 22 to 13 thus winning the Secldon Shield. This is the second garre of the tour and the second' victory. Dore, a Peninsula player is mentioned as being one of the best backs in the Canterbury team.
During the week the Secondary Department of the Akaroa District High School was cxanvned by Mr C. Haslam, Inspector. As a result of the examination ten of the eleven pupils of Form IV. have been recommended for Senior Free Places, provided attendance and' progress are satisfactory for the remaining part of the year. The successful candidates were Patricia Buckland, Edna White, Winifred Innes, D. Boleyn, H. Wright, J. McKenzie, R. Petterson, O. Eves, R. 'MdDonakl and M. Gilbert.
In the report of the opening of the Akaroa Lawn Tennis Club no mention was made of the presentation of the Cups for the Club's Singles Handicaps. The Oinako Cup, given 'by Mr E. X. Le Lievre for the Ladies Handicap Singles, was won by Mrs McClure, the previous holder being Mrs Richardson. The Aulsebrook Cup given by Messrs Aulsebrook and Co. for the Men's 1 Handicap Singles was won for the first time by Mr C. B. Arnold. With the Cup Messrs Aulsebrook and Co. kindly gave a beautiful ibox of chocolates which is to be an annual accompaniment of the Cup.
) A team of boys and girls from the Secondary Department of the Southbridge District High School, numbering about 30 in all arrive in Akaroa at 111 a,.m. to-day to try conclusions with the Akaroa District High School Secondary Department pupils in various sports. In the afternoon matches of tennis, basketball and football will be played .between the two schools. The visitors leave for South brid'ge again to-morrow (Saturday), and will be entertained at a social by the Akaroa school and will be taken a launch trip on the harbour tomorrow morning. It is hoped' that weather conditions will be favourable for the trip.
