The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1929. A HOLIDAY CARNIVAL.
At the meeting of' the Akaroa Advancement Association on Wednesday evening it was decided to call a I'u'ilic meeting next month to discuss the matter of holding a carnival at t-'hristmas time to attract and enteriain visitors to tine town. The idea was not fully discussed, but certain suggestions were nv.ule which should recommend themselves. The idea is 1 to provide some aquatic sport, game or picnic during the day time and some entertainment each evening combining ail present individual] efforts of this kind into one extending over a week or ten days or whatever period is considered Ibest. The idea is a good one and if all clubs
and associations join in there should ibe no trouble in carrying out a good ■programme of entertainment. At the present time Christmas week and New Year functions are sporadic in character and' it only needs a little co-operation among the various clubs and societies 1 to provide a series of functions which could be dovetailed in together to the great advantage of the whole. At this period of the year the dances are usually run in support of local societies and clubs, the Akaroa Boating Club, the Plunket Society, the Advancement Association, Hegatta Club, etc., holding individual dances. These could still continue and additional functions could be held. In regard to day-time entertainment there are a number of day-time functions already held including the Regatta, Takamatua Sports, Horticultural Society's Sun> ! me r Show, etc. To these might easily be added a good picnic across the water, outlboard motor racing, yachting and other aquatic sports while tennis, golf and cricket matches could be arranged in which the visitors could be invited to take 1 .part.
This proposal to entertain and ta'ke some interest in our visitors should do a great deal pf good and it should result in all functions being carried out and supported in a more thorough manner than if left to individual club efforts. The main good it would' do would be to show those coming to the town that we wished them to enjoy their visit here and that every effort was being- made to entertain theno. At the same time the publicity given to the various functions would be better organised and the- visitors could not, as they have in the past, complained that there was "nothing- to do." From the local clubs' and societies' point of view their functions would be ibetter organised and should become far more financially successful than in the past.
The proposal should be taken up enthusiastically as the idea is a good one from- many points of view. Other places provide th'ese little attentions which are always appreciated by visitors.
