The work: of topdressing and levelling the A'karoa Bowling Club green is completed. The work has 1 been carried out by the Borough gardener and: should' ibe of great benefit to the Club. The Green has Ibeem very much out of level and this defect' has been remedied. Wilth a good strike of grass and level rinks' the green should play much more truly than it has done of l'aste.
Time saved means money saved — this is why so many farmers now buy used cars fitted with light delivery bodies —these vehicles 'halve the distance to your nearest railway station or you can deliver produce direct to your market. Todd Motors, Victoria Street, Christchurch, have light delivery vans from £40 upwards —write Todd Motors for complete list.
A shop was held on Saturday in aid of funds for the Akaroa Boy Scouts when the sum o'f £4 8s was taken. A box of chocolates, donated by Mr F. Davis was won by Mrs R. Jj. Paterson and five tickets to the Pictures, given by Mr T. E. Taylor, was won by 'Miss Mavis W'alker. The Scouts and Guides have now~enough in band Ito pay for the flooring of the Drill Hall and Ito cover current expenses for the year.
The Akaroa Croquet iClub held two working bees last week and' chipped off the rough grass on their largest lawn which was very rough owing to the sea having come oVer in. the tidal wave last January. The work was carried out at the suggestion of the Borough gardener and' Mr R. Hammondl was employed Ito rake over and re-sow it with seed covering the whole wilth a light topdressing. The 'lawn, will; not be ready for play till about November.
Every year the Akaroa Borough Council has to repairs the baths as the seas usually loosen a few of the palings forming the baths enclosure. This year the da'mage has been- more extensive than usual and two large •gaps will have to ibe filled up if the 'baths are to Ibe shark proof. The loan for the building of these- baths, a sum of £800 will fall in next year when the final payment of principal and interest will be made. The- baths have certainly been a great acquisition to the Borough.
At the opening of the Akaroa. Lawn Tennis Club's- season on Saturday the Mayor (Mr. Geo. Armstrong), remarked that judging iby the number of players more 1 courts 1 would be required. Tennis is the- most popular game and three courts are not enough for the OMb's requirements, particularly when/ there are a number of visitors present. Ano'thsr tiwo courts would •be very acceptalbfe and these could be laid down in the! future -on: the section ibeyond the present courts. The greatest drawback It'o a shortage- of courts is .the inaibfliity Ito play singles except on rare occasions as there are so many p'layens waiting for a game.
At one time _the- paths jn the AkaJ>omajini we»| kept well supplied "with shell arid the! result was that they were always- in good order. Of recent years-' the .Domain Board has found) the cost of'put-ting shell on the paths somewhat prohibitive and the result iis that the paths are now in a very neglected state. It is- regrettable that the Board cannot put a. load of shells on the path at the lrwin entrance opposite the Hospital up as far a® the site of the fountain. This is npt a long distance and the result would ibe to give the Domain the appearance of -being kept in .better order.
