AKAROA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL REPORT.
At the Afcaroa Horticultural Society's annual meeting held .last Thursday at wh!c'h the' -President, Mr G. Armstrong, presided 'the following annu'al report was a'dopted.
"The season 1928-'2& was a mos't successful one, the Novemiber Show was 'most successful, a record number of entries' being - received and the excellent quality of the rose ex-
hilbi-.ts being commented' upon by the .judge'. Unfortunately the weather for the Summer Shciw was 1 most disastrous and this greatly affectedthe numlben and l quality of the exhibits, besi'des keeping away many interested 1 spectators. For both shews judges were (brought from town, Mr Lenmicf kindly consenting to judge the Rose Show and Mr Nairn the Su.ranv-r Show.
During the yean 'a sh'o ( p was held when aibout CI7 was collected. A portion of this- money was spent in ■buying trestles, which have been
mcslt acceotaib'e for the decorated taibles. The .fun'dss of the Society are in a satisfactory condition, we began the year with a defeat balance o£ £M (14s 6d and ended -with, a credit cf £3 10s. We had' several unusual expenseis' thi.s ye'ar, including £3 Is for printing and- £6 15s for trestles.
The thanks o'f the S'oc.icty are due to those who gave special l prices and a l ''so Ito those who gave donation's in cash. Thanks are' also due to Mrs Jacobson and -her lady helpers, who supplied afternoon tea and' sup,per at ■both ishoiws, which 1 not only added"
itc the attraction of the shows, but ' helped the funds' to the extent of - aibout £4. Th-an.ks are al'so due to the Stewards who attended to the placing of the trestles. During -.'the year the schedules of both shews wei'e discussed'' and several alterations were suggested to the November schedule and some, alterations to the Summer schedule were a,greed upon." h ■MORE EN-TRIES REQUIRED. J; Last year the Summer Show was | ruined ! by the weather and considering the ba'd conditions there was z good show of flowers and vegetables However, there are usually not ar many ex-hiib'its as there should be considering how easy it is to grow flowers in A.'karoa. I-t would be a great help to the promoters of the ' ( shows i'f people would enter more freely. There- -are 'a-number o'f de- | cora'tive classes and tWose' who have not the time or inolmaition to grow flowers themselves can* always obtain flowers from others for these classes. The iSooieity receives donation? fronr- a number of interested supporters and the 1 quality o,f the exhibits shown h'as been remarked upon by such judges as 1 Messrs Leimie and Nairn If a few lh'oi'e people would come forward with entries the Shows would 'be a .much greater success as , wider- ' competition begets wider interest. The sche'dule for the Rose.. iShow is: being amended upon the suggestiom o>f Mr T. D. Lennie and brought m'ore .up to daite. -It is hoped this will encourage- more people to enter for the' co'ming Show on Friday, November 29th.
