DISINTEGRATION OF THE COUNTY.
Our member sent us the following telegram on Friday morning :—" Ell introduced Wairewa Oonnty Bill and I presented petitions for and against. Seddon moved that the petitions be read, and afterwards stated to the House that he would oppose any Bill having for its object the subdivision of a county."
The County Ohairman, Mr Bruce, and the Chairman of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, Mr J. R. Newton, proceed to Wellington to oppose the Wairewa County Bill, and, we understand, an influential deputation in support of same will go from Little River. The "Lyttelton Times" says:—" The separation of the Little River Riding of the Akaroa County is not likely to be authorised by Parliament without a pretty sharp contest. Mr Ell, who has charge of the Wairewa County Bill, introduced that measure on Thursday, and Mr Rhodes, the member for the district, presented three petitions on the subject at the same time. One was from Mr Parkinson, Mr W. H. Montgomery and others, in favour of the Bill, and the others were from the chairman of the Akaroa County Council and H. W. Piper and others, contra. On the Premier's motion, the petitions were read. Mr Seddon said that during his recent visit to Akaroa this matter was brought under his notice, and he then declared that he would oppose any sub-division of the county. The petitions were referred with the Bill to the Local Bills CornCommittee.
