Lieutenant Colonel Robin has been appointed to the command of the Otago military district, and Lieut.-Colonel Webb, whom he succeeds will be transferred to Canterbury, vice Lieut.-Col. Gordon retired, Lieut.-Col. Newall remains in Wellington.
Sydney, Sept. 5
It is understood that there are good grounds for stating that after lengthened experiments a successful method of desulphurising sulphite ores has been discovered. This process has been described as inexpensive and expeditious, the ore being completely desulphurised in a very short time without the aid of roasting furnaces and at a cost of only a few shillings per ton., leaving the sulphide ores completely oxidised. A State trial has yet to be made on a large scale. Much excitement prevails at Broken Hill.
London:, Sept. 4th. torpedo boat destroyers Zypher and Fervent form part of a flotilla of destroyers intended to strengthen the Australian squadron. The Ophir has arrived at Cape Verde Islands. The Royal travellers had a

The Royal Commission, appointed to inquire into Dr Koch's theory with regard to tuberculosis not being cjmmunicable from bovines to human beings as enunciated by him at the recent conference, consists of Sir Michael Foster, Dr. G. S. Woodhead, professor of pathology at Cambridge, and Dr Sydney Martin, Professor of Pathology at the University College, Professor Boyne, of Liverpool, and JDr John McOudyean, of the Royal Veterinary College.
The Magistrate at Prieska reports that Boers captured and shot in cold blood two unarmed scouts at Harulkloof.
There are persistent reports that De Wet, Myberg and other commandants threaten to shoot armed Dutch colonists captured after September 15th.
Boer refugee camps are being established at Durban.
