FOOTBALL.

PENINSULA FLAG MATCHES.

Wairewa v. Akaroa,

The above teams met for the second time this season on Saturday last at Little River. The ground was in a filthy state, and partly submerged, rendering good play impossible. The game was mostly a forward one, at which Wairewa, being heavier than their opponents, showed to great advantage, and the local team won by 6 points (2 tries) to nil.

.. karoa won the toss and elected to play with the wiud. Reed kicked off, and the Akaroa forwards took the ball to the Wairewa twenty-five, but off-side play gave Wairewa a chance of neutralizing play. After this the Wairewa forwards gradually worked tho ball into the visitors.' territory*, where a brilliant piece of play between 1?. Archer and B. Stevens ended in the latter scoring at the corner. On resuming play, Ormandy, from a mark, made a splendid kick at goal from a difficult angle, the ball striking the bar and rebounding into play. After this, nothing interesting took place, and half time sounded with the ball in mid-field.

At the start of the second spell, Wairewa rushed the ball into the visitors' twentyfive, where force-downs were frequent. At last P. Sefton and W. Davis headed a dribbling iush and Davis picked up and scored. The kick at goal was a failure, and "no side " sounded with the visitors hard defending their line.

Coming to individual play, Archer played a sterling back for Wairewa, while Marsh, Gillanders, Breitmeyer and Sefton were most prominent of a good lot of forwards. Akaroa's best forwards were Ormandy, P. Wilkin, McKenzie (2), W. Mitchell and Goodwin, and Narbey and H. Wilkins were very safe iv the back division. Mr G. R Sefton, as referee, gave satitfaction to both teams. The visitors were afterwards enter taiued at Mr Thompson's, where all seemed

to do justice to a good dinner after such a I rolling in the slush. A _moke concert waß then held, and much enjoyed.
