CHRISTCHURCH V, AKAROA.

The splendid spell of fine weather has proved quite a boon to the football-loving public, who showed their appreciation by consistently turning out in large numbers. The Ohristchurch-Akaroa match being looked upon asjthe most important match of the season, quite a large crowd assembled yesterday on the Recreation Ground, which was in fairly good order. The following are the respective teams : Christchurch—Bishop, Nalder, Appleby, Wilson, W. E. Styche, 8. Styche, Hawkee, Ryan, Wilson, Matson, Overton, Flavall, Nicoll and Denham Akaroa — Helbert, Buchanan, Trire, Vangioni, Wight, Bamford, Newbigan, W, bhadbolt, Glynan (2), Hemingway, Narbey, Mitchell, Kearney, Goodwin. Mr W. Hemingway acted ac Referee.

Shortly after 3 o'clock Hawkee kicked off for the visitors, tbe kick bding returned by Vangioni. A passing rash by the visitors nearly ended in a ecore, but a hard kick by Styche resulted in a force. Bamford kicked well up thej field, where a scrum ensued, and Nalder gaining poßfiession male a splendid run down the field, but was grassed by Buchauan. A. paeeing rush by Tripe, Vangioni, and Narbey enabled the latter to score first blood for Akaroa. Bamford took the kick but did not improve. Akaroa 3 points, Cbristchurch nil. On. resuming play the visitors soon had their opponents on the defensive, but by the splendid play of the Akaroa forwards the ball was worked well up the field. Wight at this i stage made a splendid run, and Goodwin

gaining possession carried the ball over • the line, but was brought back on account of an infringement. From a scrum Bamford got possession and dodging the opposing >hncks scored the second try, and taking the kick himaolf placed a beantiful goal, Akaroa 8 points, ChrJptoharch ml. Hawkes, by kicking well no the field, bad the local team once again on the defensive, but the good kicking ot the backs brought the ball into the Christohurch twenty- : 'five. A bpantiful piece of passing resulted in Narbey, after a brilliant run, again scoring, Bum ford tailing to kick the desired goal. Hawkes , kink was well returned by Helbert, «,nd Nalder guinini? possession, ran through the opposing backs and was chased by H>mingw.ay, who collared him on the line Akaroa worked the leather up the fiild again, but the game had to be stopped for a few minutes on account ot one of the visitors being disabled. On resuming play a free kick was awarded to the visitors, Bishop making a splendid attempt, the ball falling a few inches short By the splendid play of Newbigan and J. Glynan, the visitors were again put on the defensive, but owing to an infringement by Bamford were awarded a free kick, which enabled them to clear "their line. By good passing among the Akaroa backs Vangioni, after a dashing run, scored the fourth try, Bamford being successful with the kick. Akaroa 16 points, Christchurch nil. On resuming, the visitors had the local men on the defensive. A free kick by Bishop fell short. Tripe, by kicking well up the field, gained a lot of ground, when a-series of scrums took place. The Styciie brothers, who were playing a rattling game, soon had the ball in the Akaroa twenly-nVe, where it remained until half-time was called.

Narbey started the second spell by sending the ball well up the field. A pass from Wight resulted in Hemingway scoring after a capital run. Bam ford taking the kick farther increased the score to 21 points. Bishop had another shot at goal but, the ball weut low. Tripe by a smart run and kick brought the ball to the half-way flag where a scrum took place, and Wight gaining possession, with a capital run took the leather to the visitors' line. A pass to Buchanan enabled that player to cross the line, no goal resulting. W.E. Styciie came to the rescue, making a splendid run through the opposing backs, Hemißg • way collnring oa thelin6. Loose play ensued, and Goodwin snapping up the ball made the runofthe dayj crossing the line, but by trying to get nearer the posts lost a try, being tackled by Bishop. Mitchell was the next to score, which Bamford improved' Akaroa 29 points. Chmtchurch nil. On resuming, the visitors 1 line was once more in danger but a good run by Appleby gave them relief. A pretty piece of passing between J, (ilynan and Hemingway resulted in the latter scoring. A pass to J. Glynan enabled him to score, no goal resulting, Shortly after, Narbey scored, but no goal resulted. Akaroa 38 Christohurch Nil. Time was then called.

The passing on both sides was a treat to witnes •.. Akaroa tad the best of the game all through, and deserve cre:it for their unselfish play. For the visitors the Styche Bros,, Appleby and Nalder of the backs deserve special mention, and of the forwards Hawkes, Wilson, Denham and Flavell. On the Akaroa side, Helbert at full-back played a splendid game, never making a mistake ; Tripe at centre played a very unselfish game ; Vangioni kepi np the his reputation of being the best three-quarter on the Peninsula; Wight and Jiamford's running and defence was really a sight worth seeing. Of the forwards, Hemingway, J. Glynan, Newbigan, Goodwin and Narbey were the pick, the last named being the best forward on the field.

The visitors were entertained at a smoke concert at Grange's Hotel, Inst night, when a very enjoyable evening was spent.

The following team will play for Akaroa against Wairewa to morrow : — Helbert, Vangioni, Tripe, Buehanan, Wight, Bamford, Newbigan. bhadbolt, Mitchell, Kearney, Goodwin, J. Hemingway, Glynan (2), H. Cnrrv. Emergencies—Mors, ftichfield, Perhaui.

Little Akaloa won the Cup match against Wairewa by 18 to nil.
