MR. CHAPPELL IN REPLY.

!To the Editor

Sir,-—7?<3 Mr Potts' letter of Friday last, Mr Potts' bump of corabativeness must enlarge when the moon gets towards the full, or he would never have thought of writing to your paper such a fabrication of nonsense. Mr Potta some months ago asked to ha*e some metal put on the sharp rise from the top of Jolie street across the head of William street, which the Council has done. The Works Committee also considered it

advisable to re-metal a portion of William street, which has only partly been done on account of the heavy rains, the workmen having to be sent to more important works. Why does Mr Potts persistently button-hole every councillor to bring up his bit of a pet road ? He has been told by more than one to put his grievance in writing, and then when it

came before the Council it could be duly considered on its merits ; bat that does not Reem to suit that gentleman.

He is thoroughly aware that the upper portion of William street is no good for cart traffic until very much improved, and in our opinion it would bo waste" of money to metal it, as the metal in six months time would be all down at the fool of the hill.

He mentions a dozen discontented ratepayers close round himi I have spoken to several but .they 6eem to consider that the Council has done more permanent works about that particular part of the town than has been done for years. I may say fchat none of the councillors question Mr Potts' right to an asphalt footpath and for all he says, he must know that it is better to do the most frequented part of the town first.

I must tell him that I consider myself very lucky in having Mr Penlington, who is both a tried and worthy gentleman, thoroughly up to all that is required, on the Works Committee to work with; The remarks he makes about my knowledge of the duties of Chairman of the Works Committee, I can afford to pass over aR his opinion on that point is not worth 6s Bd.-—Yours &c.

E. CHAPPELL.
