THE STORM.
The rain on Friday caiiaed a big clip 'at Mr D. LeComte's and a small one at Tinker's Gnltey. Mr 8. Johnson. brought do wn word that the road was imfias'sible for the mail conch on Saturday morning, so Mr Barker resolved (o ' take a bugpy and pair nip the old' Pigeon ■ Bay foad, vrith a'saddle in case that ' road was also blocked! However, that road was all clear, and everyt.bmg being s in good order on the Little Rivpr side, the mail arrived in good tfmei Coming hdme -with four'passengers, tho regular ' road was adhefed'to, and Vliebugpy got : past the points of the two slips in perfect safely. Men' were at work on the rdad all Sunday and yesterday. The slips ; have been cleared away sufficiently to r slldw of ordinary traffic- It is reported there are some heavy slips on the'new 'Pigeon Bay road, but ; we have no particulars to hand. On the road between Akaroa and Duvauchelle's there were '•large slips near 'Mr Churchill's and on | 'ihe Akaroa side of Duvauchelle's hill opposite Mr 8. Curry's. There was 'nothing/however,* to stop the coach, and '-yesterday men were busuly employed ■ clearing away the stufif that"-had fallen. With regard to the-Pigeon Bay road we hear that oa Saturday Mr R. Paton was unable to get down the road with Mrs r KayV coffin, and eventu&lly had to take 'it down the old road with a sledge. At.Little River » good deal of damage .. was done to and bridges by the J flood, nnd a good'deal of timber aud firewood was washed down the main streams. Men were basy yesterday pulling out sleepers and bridge stuff that had been carried down. On Saturday men and boys were busy picking up the eels and trout that had been "washed on io the b&nke by the flood. Some of the latter were really fine fish.
The heavy rain on Friday has not done any great damage. Friends-from Little £kaloa, Okain's, Lβ Bon's and Long Bay Road have not suffered at ell severely, and in the Borough itself little damage has been done in spite of the excessive rainfall. This is in a great 'measure due to the fact that the creeks are now pretty clear of timber and no ■blocks occur. We hear of some damage done at Mr Daly's by recently felled trees, and as a matter of course a , certain number of poultry have gone the way of allfl'sh.
'1 be rainfall in Akaroa from Friday at am. to Saturday at 9 am. was 4:60 iuctres.
Our Bay correspondent "writes :—The rain here on Friday last was the heaviest for'years. The creeks' rose rapidly.-and three or four small bridges up thevalley were washed away. The new bridge recently built by the 'Jlond Board was much damaged. "The water succeeded in-getting behind the cement work, the result being that the stone work nrid the-upper side of the supporters were washed away,'the bridge ■collapsing Very few slips are recorded, the only troublesome ©ne -being below Mr D. -LeCc-mte's, "which • caused Mr Barker to take the summit road to Little River on Saturday. A", great deal of 'the shingle lately put on by the'Gounty -Council has 1 been washed Off the roadsowing to their being -flooded. A very nasty slip occurred on Mr Piper's pro---perty, Duvauchclle's on the rise below the second gate, completely smotheriEg ■the road for a considerable dieiance, and' 'carrying away a good deal of fencing.
